 【訳】 新築一年目の家は敵に貸せ、二年目は友人に貸せ、三年目に自分で住め。

 【訳】 蠅にも脾臓(ひぞう)があり蟻にも胆汁(たんじゅう)がある。
 はえやありのような小動物も怒りや恨みの感情を持っているから、まして人間はいうまでもない。

 【訳】 甲の愚行は乙の幸せ。
 「人の過ちわが幸せ」

 【訳】 大魚は小魚を食う。

 【訳】 大は小を包含する。
 【類句】 大は小を兼ねる

38. The greatest hate proceeds (or springs) from the greatest love.

 【訳】 最大の憎しみは最大の愛から生ずる。
 【類句】 可愛さ余って憎さ百倍

 【訳】 最大の一歩は戸外への一歩である。
 第一歩を踏み出すことが最も困難(重要)である、という意味。

 【訳】 最大の富は僅少(きんしょう)のものに満足していることである。
 【類句】 足るを知る者は富む

 【訳】 僧帽だけでは修道士は出来上がらない。
 「衣ばかりで和尚はできぬ」

 【訳】 この世の喜びはほんの少ししか続かない。

 【訳】 口下手では何も得られない。
 「神へも物は申しがら」

 【訳】 たげりは巣から最も遠くにいる時に最もさかんに鳴く。
 自己防衛の陽動作戦として、心に思っていることと正反対のことをロにすることの例え。

 【訳】 最後のわら一本のためにらくだの背骨が折れる。
 わずかなものでも度を過ごすと破滅を引き起こす、という意味。

 【訳】 人の一生は冬の日、冬の道である。
 冬の日とは、短くて荒れている、という意味で、冬の道とは、泥んこ道のこと。
 【類句】 人の一生は重荷を負うて遠き道を行くが如し

 【訳】 同類は同類を生む。
 Like begets like. ともいう。
 【類句】 瓜の蔓に茄子はならぬ

 【訳】 物を受け取る娘は自分を売る者であり、物を与える娘は身をまかせる者である。

 「狡兎(こうと)の三穴」

 【訳】 くじゃくは羽は美しいが足は汚い。

 【訳】 ペンは剣よりも強し。
 【参考】 ペンは剣よりも強し

 【訳】 なべはやかんを黒いと笑う。
 自分のことは棚に上げて他人のことを非難する、という意味。
 【類句】 目糞鼻糞を笑う

 【訳】 かめはあまりしばしば井戸へ行くのでついに割れてしまう。
 調子に乗りすぎるとついには失敗する、という意味。

 【訳】 国家の利益は個人の快楽に優先すべきである。
 「公をもって私を滅す」

62. The proof of the (or a) pudding is in the eating.

 【訳】 プディングの品質試験は食べてみることにある。
 物事は実際にぶつかってみないと実体は分からない、という意味。
 【類句】 論より証拠

63. The properer (or honester) man the worse luck.

 【訳】 品性が立派な人ほど運が悪い。
 【類句】 正直者が馬鹿を見る

64. The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong.

 【訳】 競走は足の速い者のものではなく、また、戦争は強い者のものでもない。
